Do you ever dream of being a world famous novelist? I feel like I should write a novel, but it’s always so hard to get started. I’m not sure what I would write about, and I’m afraid I would write something too goofily autobiographical. They say that the key to being a good writer is to read a ton, so I’m focusing on that for now!
Besides not having a topic for a novel, I’m not so sure I have the name to be a novelist. I’d like a name with a little more zing… a pen name or “nom de plume” is what I’m looking for 🙂 It would be nice to have a cool sounding, literary name – especially if people could pronounce it more easily than Kari. (Yes, it just rhymes with “starry,” but that’s still a bit tricky for some people!)
Were you fascinated by pen names as a kid? I always thought the idea of changing your name was extremely interesting – probably because names seemed so set in stone until I learned that you can change them. I don’t think I’d want to change my name permanently, but I think it’s cool how some authors sometimes adopt pen names to try out a different persona or to secretly test a new idea without attaching their names to it.
Instead of coming up with my own pen name, I decided to write a quiz to do it. I hope you enjoy getting your own pen name as well, and who knows? Maybe this quiz will inspire you (and me) to get writing: What’s Your Pen Name?
Discussion question: Would you prefer to write under your own name or under a pen name?
Do you like to write? Or have you at least dreamed about it? I don’t spend much time writing more than quizzes and blog posts, but I have dreams of writing a novel. Maybe not a Great American Novel, but hopefully something readable 🙂
If you were going to write a book or short story, what genre would you write? Take my latest quiz to see what kind of work you should write: What Genre Should You Write? Let me know what you get and if you agree with your result.
Discussion question: What sort of writing have you dreamed of doing? You can answer genre or form… or both!
Do you write in a diary or journal? I love to write, but I honestly have not been much of either over the years. As a young girl, I kept a diary occasionally because I thought that was what I was supposed to do. But I never made a habit of it, and most of my journals sat empty save for a couple entries at the beginning. I suppose I always thought my life or point of view was not that interesting and not really worth writing down. I do wish that I had written a journal during my youth though. It would be fun to go back over as an adult 🙂
When one of this blog’s readers (hi! Pamu) suggested a quiz to determine whether you are a diary or journal person, it got me thinking. Maybe I tried the wrong kind of journaling or diary writing when I was young. After all, I do like to write. Maybe I simply need to experiment more with the various ways of chronicling my life. It is an old art form, as many historical figures kept journals!
Anyway, I developed my latest quiz to show you whether a journal or diary is best for your personality type: Are You a Diary or a Journal Quiz? Not only will it tell you if you’re better suited for a journal or diary, it will tell you what kind of journal or diary is best for you. Give this one a whirl, and let me know what you think of your result.
