Are you a bohemian? I would not say that I am one by any stretch of the imagination, but I like a little bit of bohemian influence in my home decor and fashion 🙂 And I think bohemian names are really cool, even if I don’t have one!
Today’s quick quiz was inspired by modern bohemian names, and if you’re anything like me, I think you’ll get a kick out of it. Try out a new bohemian name for size: What’s Your Bohemian Name?
Let me know what you get, and what you think of your totally boho name. Do you consider yourself a bohemian in any way?
Do you know any geeks? What about any hipsters? Do you find it hard to distinguish between the two? I am finding it hard to distinguish between hipsters and geeks, at least by appearances alone. Some cities, like Austin and San Francisco, have a lot of both – and there is starting to be a lot of overlap between the two subcultures. When I see someone in an indie coffee shop working hard on her laptop wearing a cool t-shirt… well, which is she? 😉 Hipster or geek?
Of course, people on the internet never get sick of discussing subcultural differences. And since there are plenty of both hipsters and geeks online (or people who at least accuse one another of being hipsters and geeks), I didn’t have much trouble researching this quiz. At first, I felt persuaded by the idea that hipsters and geeks have somewhat different taste, and I do think that’s true to some extent. (You will see this show up a little in my quiz.) What I totally think, though, is that geeks and hipsters have very different mindsets… and not one is better than the other.
Curious to see which mindset best fits you? Take Are You a Geek or a Hipster? to see which group you fall in with. Comment below to let me know what you think of your result – and modern subcultures in general.

Did your high school have cliques? Mine definitely did. There were preppy kids, jocks, arty kids, punks, goths, hippies, skaters… well, you get the picture. I’m not sure what it is about high school that makes people all divide up into subcultures, but it seems to be one of the first times that self-identification is important. And I know for me, years later, I still have tons in common with the people who traveled in the same (alternative / geeky) circles that I traveled in.
I sort of feel like high school cliques are a universal thing, at least for public high schools in the US. (If you went to school outside of the US or private / parochial school, let me know if your experience was the same or different.) I’m not basing this on any sort of study I’ve read but just on movies and TV in a high school setting. From Grease to My So-Called Life to Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Pretty Little Liars, every school has its subcultures.
Of course, Blogthings has done the high school clique quiz before (Who Were You In High School?), but rewatching one of my favorite movies, Clueless, made me want to do a spin on it… 90s style! Even if you didn’t go to high school in the 90s, you probably remember the 90s quite well. I thought it would be fun to see who we all would have been back then: What’s Your 90s High School Stereotype?
