Quiz: What’s Your Grocery Shopping Style?

What’s your grocery shopping style?

Love it or hate it, grocery shopping is a chore pretty much all of us have to do. I have to admit that I’m a rather big fan of grocery shopping, as far as chores go. If the store is crowded or if I forgot my list, I don’t really like it so much. But if I hit the grocery store at the right time with the right plan, I find shopping for groceries to be a fun break from my life.

When I was a little girl, I liked to go grocery shopping with my mom for every trip. Back then, stores weren’t as big as they are now, and I practically had the whole store memorized. My mom wouldn’t let me get whatever I wanted, but I usually got some sort of treat for helping her out. I’m sure that’s a big reason why I like grocery shopping so much now as an adult.

There are so many amazing finds at a grocery store, and I love to slowly shop and check out everything that is available to me. I really enjoy trying new products, and I have pretty broad tastes. I also have to admit that I’m a bit of a deal seeker. It gives me a small thrill to get a great price on my groceries. I’m not an extreme couponer by any means – although I think people who do that are awesome! I do like to look for sale items and coupons in my store, and when my favorites are inexpensive, I definitely stock up.

Quiz: What’s Your Shopping Stereotype?

What kind of shopper are you?

Happy Boxing Day to all you living outside the US. And happy “return that stinky holiday gift” day for everyone living in my country. (And many of us have to work today!) I have to admit that until a few years ago, I had never even heard of Boxing Day. And still now, I’m not too familiar with how it’s celebrated. I believe in most countries it’s a big shopping day. And one thing I do know… that’s shopping 😉 So how about a shopping quiz for this Boxing Day?

What kind of shopper are you? I have to admit that I like the finer things in life and that I have very expensive taste. Because of this, I rarely shop. There’s so much I’d like to buy, and it’s not cheap. I’m a huge window shopper, but in practice, I try to be a minimalist. What about you? What’s Your Shopping Stereotype?

Take  What’s Your Shopping Stereotype?, and let me know what you get. What kind of shopper do you think you are? And maybe even what kind of shopper would you like to be? I’d personally like to be one of those shoppers who can inexpensively find amazing things at thrift stores. I have a friend who knows how to find a stylish pair of jeans for $7. I’d really like to be that kind of girl, even though I’m totally not. I don’t have the patience for it, I suppose 🙂

I’m also curious, how do you celebrate Boxing Day / the day after Christmas in your area or family? Please comment and let me know. When I was in Japan one year, I noticed that they sell big mystery packages on boxing day at many stores. I guess these packages are full of goodies that are marked down for clearance. I thought that was a fun idea.

Quiz: Are You Walmart or Target?

target-dogDo you prefer Walmart or Target? It seems like everyone has an opinion about what they like better – Walmart or Target. Walmart’s cheaper. Target’s snazzier. Walmart’s open 24 hours a day. Target has pretty, shiny things to buy. Walmart and Target are both awesome places to shop, especially when you are looking for a great price on a variety of items.

You may feel like there is a big difference between Walmart shoppers and Target shoppers, and you would be right. While most people prefer shopping at Walmart to Target,  more urban, yuppie types tend to like Target better. Target shoppers tend to be more trend and image oriented, while Walmart folks are looking to buy in volume on a budget. I’m not stereotyping, y’all – there are studies to back this up!

I can see both sides to this Walmart vs Target debate- as I think I am both a Walmart and Target person at times. (Though I have to say that I try to avoid big box stores whenever I can, something that’s getting harder and harder these days.) Walmart is great for when you need, oh I don’t know, a replacement air conditioner at 3:30AM. And Target is just so fun for browsing around in a red cart, discovering quirky new products. While I wish I could buy all my goods on Main Street from family businesses, it seems like that ship sailed generations ago.

What about you? Are you more like Walmart or Target? Take my quiz Are You Walmart or Target? to find out.

Give Are You Walmart or Target?  a try, and let me know what you think. Do you have a preference between Walmart and Target? Or are you like me and try to buy things at other places? Let me know what your shopping preferences are, especially during this holiday season.

Quiz: Should You Celebrate Buy Nothing Day?

Happy Buy Nothing Day!

Happy Black Friday!

Wait… what? If you haven’t noticed, it’s sort of a confusing day today. It’s both Buy Nothing Day and Black Friday. On the one had, we have a day that rallies against consumerism – Buy Nothing Day. On the other hand, Black Friday is all about consumerism… scoring some deals on holiday gifts.

I feel like both events are very valid. First of all, I’ll defend Black Friday a bit. Yes, many people do take it too far with fighting over items, standing in line for hours, and buying things that they don’t need. It is such an insane consumer extravaganza. However, I do shop Black Friday sales myself, selectively. I do feel like the holidays are too oriented towards gifts, but I also do buy people gifts on a limited budget. I think we all agree that there’s some huge savings on Black Friday, and I don’t fault anyone for wanting to save some money on their holiday shopping – me included.

On the other hand, I also do feel like the holidays are way too commercial. For so many people, love is expressed by buying things we can’t afford and that our family and friends don’t need anyway. I love the idea of homemade gifts, repurposed items, and even the gift of time or service. And I think Buy Nothing Day supports this – which I think is awesome. To be completely honest, in an ideal world, I would fully participate in Buy Nothing Day every year because that is where my heart is at.

So what are we to do? First of all, take my new quiz – Should You Celebrate Buy Nothing Day? You’ll learn whether you should shop til you drop today or drop out of the consumer rat race.

Take Should You Celebrate Buy Nothing Day? , and let me know what you think. What did you get on this quiz? Do you think the holidays are too commercial in general? I’m curious to know what you think of a movement like Buy Nothing Day.
