Have you seen the movie Mona Lisa Smile? I missed this one when it first came out, which is kind of surprising given its stellar cast (Julia Roberts, Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles, and Maggie Gyllenhaal to name a few). It’s a look at 1950s life at a women’s college, and I thought it would make the perfect Blogthings quiz, since so many of the characters are interesting and likable.
The best way that I could describe Mona Lisa Smile is that it’s like Dead Poets Society, except with women. And if you ask me, Julia Roberts is just as engaging as Robin Williams was in her own way. This movie is a great look at what life was like for women at a women’s college in 1953 – a world that we are all far away from at this point! It’s such a great escape to watch, but I’d also say it’s quite a thought provoking film as well.
Clearly, Mona Lisa Smile is the perfect movie for anyone interested in coming of age stories, feminism, or history. But something that surprised me is that it’s also a great movie for people interested in art. Just as the world was changing for women and college in the 1950s, the world was changing for art as well. Very fascinating stuff.
Are you a fan of Mona Lisa Smile? Then take my latest quiz: What Mona Lisa Smile Character Are You? What do you think of your result? Is it accurate? Did this quiz spark your interest in the movie – or help you look at it through new eyes.
What other coming of age type movies have you enjoyed? Let me know, and maybe I’ll write a quiz about them!
Does the phrase “You’ve Got Mail” mean anything to you? For those of us of a certain age, we never will forget that exciting phrase that was uttered every time we had mail on AOL! And those of us who were really dialed into the 90s know that this phrase was even turned into a romance movie starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. While some people mocked a movie based on an AOL when it came out romance out, You’ve Got Mail turned out to be a classic romantic comedy that stood the test of time.
I didn’t really like the movie You’ve Got Mail when it came out (it felt like too much of a commercial for AOL at the time), but it’s grown on me over the years. It’s such a sweet story, and the nostalgia appeal alone is there at this point. The dialog is spot on… thanks Nora Ephron! Plus, you can’t get much better than autumn, the holidays, and spring in New York City. Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan give such charming performances in You’ve Got Mail, and if you happen to be a Parker Posey fan, she’s got an amazing small part in this movie too.
Since we’re just about to get into autumn, I thought this would be the perfect time to write a quiz about You’ve Got Mail: What You’ve Got Mail Character Are You? If you like a classic love story or miss the 90s, then you’ve got to check out You’ve Got Mail. Definitely watch the movie before taking this quiz – makes much more sense that way.
Give this quiz it a go, and let me know what you think of your result? Are you also a fan of this movie? Are there any other romantic comedies you’d like to see me write a quiz about?
Are you a big Jane Austen fan? I definitely am, and I try to write as much Jane Austen based quizzes as I can. Despite Blogthings having quite a few Jane Austin quizzes, I was remiss in writing a Pride and Prejudice based quiz. Until today!
While I can’t say that I have a favorite Jane Austen work, Pride and Prejudice is a book I love to revisit again and again. The world of the Bennet sisters is just too compelling to ignore, and given how many movies and series have been based on the book, I suppose others agree 🙂 If you are looking for a little Pride and Prejudice kick, then check out my latest quiz: Which Bennet Sister Are You?
Take the quiz, and let me know what you get. Does it match who your favorite Bennet sister is?
