Do you think that the time of year you are born has some impact on your personality? I’m not talking about astrology here… I’m talking more about seasons. For example, someone born in January in the United States and July in Australia have completely different astrological signs, but they were both born in the dead of winter. Do you see what I mean? Do those two people have something in common being born in the same season … despite being born at different times of the calendar year? Science is starting to say yes.
At the very least, babies born in the winter are said to have more sensitivity to seasonal changes. (As a winter baby, I find this fact particularly interesting!) I have also heard that because of how the school year is structured, people born closer to the cutoff date for ages tend to turn out differently because they are the youngest in their class. (Something that obviously makes a much bigger difference when you’re 5 than when you’re 15.)
While I find scientific studies on birth season interesting, that’s not what my latest quiz is based on. I’d love to do a scientifically based birth season personality quiz, but there just isn’t enough research out there yet. For now, I’ll do a culturally based / historical one instead.
Did you know that we all have birth flowers? I had no idea until I recently read an article about them. It turns out that birth flowers are a long honored tradition, dating back to the Romans (if you believe Wikipedia!). Over the years, different cultures have designated different flowers for each time of the year – with a lot of overlap. Just like with gemstones, there isn’t necessarily one flower for your month … it depends on region and tradition. However, the flowers for each month tend to be very similar and from the same family.
Needless to say, when I discovered birth flowers, I knew I had to write a quiz about them. I love flowers – not so much getting them but actually appreciating them in nature. I think it’s cool that flowers come with meanings, symbolism, and tradition attached to them. Clearly, they are a great topic for a quiz, and what gets easier than having to simply pick out your birth month.
Did you know that birthday quizzes are some of the most popular quizzes on Blogthings. It’s true! I really enjoy writing them too, because I know how special our birthdays are to us. I try to mix things up a little and write birthday quizzes that are both astrology and non-astrology based. Luckily, there are lots of areas to draw from when considering birthdays, and I’ve had a lot of fun flexing my creativity with these quizzes.
For example, I recently ran across a wheel of birth colors in a book I was browsing through. I found the concept intriguing. Instead of basing birth colors on astrology, they were simply based on when someone is born and what color is traditionally associated with that time. The author then went to talk about the personality characteristics that each color represented. I thought, “This would be a really cool topic for a quiz!”
Anyway, I did some more research on this birth color theory, and came up with What’s Your Birth Color? I think color aficionados will enjoy this test, as well as anyone who feels a bit dissatisfied or unmatched with their astrological sign and / or gemstone. I found that my birth color (Indigo) was an interesting complement to my normal star sign (Aquarius). I liked that my birth color seemed to represent, a calmer, more mature version of myself.

Happy Friday everyone… and happy birthday to me 🙂 Yup, it is really, truly my birthday today, and I’m excited that it falls on the Friday Five day. I can’t think of a more fun way to celebrate than with a birthday themed Friday Five. (And don’t worry if I’m working too hard on my big day – I wrote this post ahead of time.) As far as other celebrations go, I am going to ask Mr. Blogthings to take me out to a fun restaurant or two and eat lots of birthday cupcakes. And I have a special movie picked out for tonight. I like to keep it low key.
All you have to do to enter is comment below and answer the Friday Five. I will run a random number generator on Monday morning and pick the winners that way. I will comment on the thread to the people who won, so you can check back to see who won that way. If you miss it, I will announce the winner on Facebook and also next week in the P.S.
So, here are the Friday Five questions for this week. Simply answer below in a comment to enter

Do you like to have a cake on your birthday? If so, which kind?
What celebrities, family members, or friends share your birthday? (Feel free to do a couple searches to find out)
When choosing what sort of quiz to write for Blogthings, I try to think about the things that link us all. I want my quizzes to reach and impact as many people as possible, so I love to pick universal subjects – things we have all dealt with or can relate to. This is why so many of my quizzes are psychologically based (and well, I do love psychology). It’s also why I tackle topics like love, food, childhood, friendship, work, learning, and character. These are universals that connect us all, and no matter what your background is, you should be able to take the quiz as easily as the next person – even if the next person is twice your age and halfway around the globe.
Birthdays are another important universal we share… possibly the most important one. After all, they mark the occasion of use getting here 😉 So whenever I have the chance to write another birthday quiz, I jump on it. I started thinking recently about birthstones and their meaning. I have always felt attached to my birthstone, amethyst, and I wondered if others felt the same way. I thought exploring this birthday personality tradition could be interesting, because it’s a little different from the usual horoscope range. Plus, jewelry is pretty and shiny!
I did a lot of research on gemstones to write my latest quiz, and I hope you like it: What Does Your Birthstone Say About You? I thought the results I ended up with were really interesting. I feel like gemstone meanings are sort of a mix between astrology and color psychology, with color psychology possibly being the overriding force. I love mashups like this, and hopefully you do as well!
