Do you seek new and exciting things? I was first introduced to the concept of novelty seeking many years ago, when I was in middle school. I took a quiz about novelty seeking, and I was hooked on personality quizzes. (Back then I scored as a strong novelty seeker, not so sure about that now!). Anyway, I still find the idea fascinating – as some friends will suggest the same activities over and over, while others crave something new. I am happy to go along with novelty seekers, but I wouldn’t mind a friendship where we had coffee at the same place every week 🙂
Novelty seeking is pretty interesting because at first psychologists thought it was a bad thing, and now they’re not so sure. A lot of the wrong novelty seeking can get you in trouble in life, but it’s also something we need to stay creative and fresh. So it’s more about striking a balance or having the right novelty seeking. Novelty seeking with hard drugs is not a good thing, but novelty seeking in art, travel, music, food, ideas, and friends is a very good thing. This is the kind of novelty seeking I strive to have more of, by the way.
The novelty seeking personality is an adventurous one. Studies show that it can get you into trouble, but it can also keep you young at heart. Novelty seekers are persistent, and they tend to have a larger perspective on life. Those all sound like good things to me! Okay, now I am definitely an aspiring novelty seeker 🙂
