Do you like steampunk? It’s hard to explain this weird little genre to people who aren’t familiar with it, but you could think of it as retro-futuristic… or neo-Victorian 🙂
I love the look of steampunk, and I like it when it’s incorporated into fiction, television, and film (like Dr. Who!) Steampunk fashion has a strong Victorian bent to it, but it’s so much cooler. Imagine Victorian fashion mixed with rusty robots. Add a dash of goth to that. Or even vampire chic. Steampunk fashion is all about corsets, goggles, and really cool boots. Oh, and also flight helmets. Don’t look at me – I don’t make up the rules!
By the way, if you don’t quite have a handle on the whole steampunk yet genre yet, some good examples of steampunk movies include Stardust, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Van Helsing, and The Prestige. (Also kind of wondering if Back to the Future III counts!)
As you can probably see, steampunk is very cool and very deep! I’m still learning a lot about it, and if you’re a relative newcomer like me, I encourage you to dip your toe in. One of my favorite things about steampunk (besides the clothes) is the names. I recently decided that Blogthings had to have a steampunk name generator. Here it is: What’s Your Steampunk Name? Let me know what you get on this one… and maybe what you think of steampunk 🙂
