Are you an impulsive person? For me it comes in waves. Sometimes I’m so impulsive that I can’t even believe it. Other times, I’m extremely risk adverse. I’ve been thinking a lot about impulse lately – especially how it can work to my advantage and disadvantage. I think that I need to be a lot more impulsive when it comes to taking calculated risks. But I also think that I should be less impulsive when it comes to slacking off and shirking responsibility.
No matter what, I think it’s important to have a fair amount of impulsiveness in my life. I need to be spontaneous and lead with my heart, sometimes. That’s how I find fun, creativity, and inspiration. A life without impulse seems too boring and unpredictable to me. I suppose I’m very afraid of getting stuck in a rut 🙂 Of course, we all know the dangers of being too impulsive, but I don’t think I’m at any risk for that.
I suppose another way of looking at impulsivity is through the lens of self-control. Psychology now says that we have a limited amount of self-control each day, and the key to life success is managing it wisely. So maybe it’s good to let myself be impulsive about small things (that extra cup of tea in the afternoon) while keeping things like impulse buying at bay.
Psychology also seems to suggest that impulsivity is on a continuum, which of course leads me to a quiz: Are You Impulsive? I wrote this quiz with the idea that impulsiveness can be measured, and I believe it can. Do you agree?
Take Are You Impulsive? and let me know what you get. Do you think it rings true for you? I’m also curious to know – in which ways do you think it’s good to be impulsive, and in which ways is it bad to be impulsive?
