New Quiz: How Will You Get to the Top?

blonde girl writing on steps

What makes you a success? Take my latest quiz to find your quickest way to the top.

Have you thought about what makes you successful in life? And also maybe what factors for success that are not so strong for you? I have spent a lot of time thinking about both these things. Like many of you, I have my strengths and weaknesses – and they are pretty obvious. I may do okay when it comes to creativity in work and thinking up ideas… but working with others is not my strong suit. I would not do well with office politics, and I’m probably not assertive enough for most corporate environments. Some people I know, on the other hand, are socially savvy. They may not be the most creative or hard working, but they make themselves indispensable with people skills.

I love the idea of figuring out the strengths that each of us have in life. I buy a lot into popular positive psychology and its idea of finding your own strengths to emphasize. Some of us may never be good at small talk or math or design – and that’s fine. Use what you’ve got, and you’ll get far. My latest quiz, How Will You Get to the Top?, is inspired by this idea. Let me know what you get, and what your strengths are.

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on How Will You Get to the Top? Is it true for you?
  2. What do you think is your strength in life? (This could be a career strength, a school strength, or any other sort of strength that makes you more effective.)
  3. What’s a strength that others have that you feel like you lack? Or that you’re at least not above average for? How do you compensate with other strengths?
  4. Take What Should You Work With? What do you think of your result?

New Quiz: Do You Forgive and Forget?

woman resting happily on bicycle

Do you believe in forgiveness? How easily do you forgive?

Are you big on forgiveness? I know that a lot of religions and belief systems place a huge importance on forgiveness, but I think it’s more interesting to look at forgiveness from a psychological point of view. There have been studies that show that forgiveness is good for us – it makes us healthier and happier. However, there are also some people that think unconditional forgiveness can perpetuate authoritarianism and abuse. So is forgiveness not all it seems?

I’m not sure how I feel about forgiveness completely, but I generally think it’s good to let go of what others have done to you – even if that isn’t technically forgiving them. I assume that most of the positive psychology studies about forgiveness are focusing on the “shelving” of the past and wrongdoings. As far as forgiveness perpetuating an unhealthy dynamic, I suppose that depends on whether you are changing boundaries and relationships before you forgive… or just forgiving blindly.

Anyway, I thought this would be an interesting topic for a quiz, and maybe even a discussion about what the concept of forgiveness means to all of us. I’m still figuring it out myself, but I do think there is a difference between forgiving and forgetting… and forgiving and not forgetting! How about you? Do You Forgive and Forget? Let me know what you get on this quiz and think of this topic.

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on Do You Forgive and Forget? Is it true for you?
  2. How do you feel about forgiving others? Are you quick or reluctant to do so?
  3. Do you agree that there are downsides to forgiveness? Or do you think that people who claim this misunderstand what forgiveness is?
  4. Take Do You Hold a Grudge? What do you think of your result?

New Quiz: The Rock-Paper-Scissors Test

symbols for rock, paper, and scissors

What do you choose: rock, paper, or scissors? And what does it say about you?

Have you ever played rock-paper-scissors? For those of you who may not be familiar with the game, it’s a simple way to determine a winner in a short amount of time. Each player makes a hand signal signifying rock, paper, or scissors at the exact same time. If both players make the same signal, that round is a tie. However, if the signals are different, then someone wins the game. In a game with rock and scissors, rock wins because rock crushes scissors. In a game with scissors and paper, scissors win because scissors cut paper.  In a game with paper and rock, paper wins, because paper covers rock.

Whew! Now that everyone is caught up to speed on rock-paper-scissors, let’s talk strategy. I know that everyone has one, and some are better than others. I’m typically pretty terrible at rock-paper-scissors because I’m easily psyched out, but I have found that the best strategy is to try to do whatever the other player last did. It tends to psych people out. I actually read that the best strategy for rock-paper-scissors may be to play it with your eyes closed, so you’re not influenced by what the other player is doing. Crazy!

No matter what you decide for how you play rock-paper-scissors, you have to start with a certain choice… and that can be difficult if you don’t know how the other person plays. It turns out that many people think your personality has a lot to do with if you choose rock, paper, or scissors. Do you agree? Take The Rock-Paper-Scissors Test. Does your result fit you?

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on The Rock-Paper-Scissors Test? Is it true for you?
  2. Do you like playing rock-paper-scissors? Why or why not?
  3. Do you have an a rock-paper-scissors strategy? Or do you just do it randomly?
  4. Take Are You Rock, Paper, or Scissors? What do you think of your result?

New Quiz: What Sea Person Are You?

cartoon of pirate, mermaid, sailor, and diver

What sort of seafarer are you? A pirate, a mermaid, a sailor, or a diver.

Do you like the ocean? I’m not just talking about the beach here (although that’s awfully nice too!). I’m talking about the deep blue sea – an amazingly beautiful, mysterious ecosystem. If you think about it, the ocean is really a whole other world. I became fascinated by the ocean as a teenager, when I would go for long swims as deep in as the adults would let me. It was so tranquil to be away from the crowded beach all on my own. I can imagine that being out in a boat in the middle of the ocean would be even more special and peaceful.

When I was growing up, I knew a lot of classmates who wanted to become marine biologists. It was funny for that to be true in my hometown, because we were over a thousand miles away from any ocean. I think a lot of people wanted that career because it meant they got to spend a lot of time in the ocean. Now that I’m older, I see how ideal that sounds… but I’m not sure I have it in me to do the training. (Who would write all the quizzes???)

Anyway, I thought it would be fun to write a quiz about an ocean fantasy life. I have always dreamed of being a mermaid, and being a pirate sounds pretty cool too (at least being a friendly pirate). Take What Sea Person Are You? to see how you might enjoy the sea. Comment below and let me know what you think of your result!

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on What Sea Person Are You? Is it true for you?
  2. Do you have a fascination with the ocean? What do you like about it?
  3. Have you ever gone diving or snorkeling in the ocean? How about exploring it in other ways? (Exploring the coastline counts!)
  4. Take The Ocean Test. What do you think of your result?

New Quiz: The Abstract Eye Test

nine funky abstract eyes

Which of these abstract eyes are you most drawn to?

Do you think people’s eyes reveal a lot about their personalities? If you’re like most Blogthings visitors, the answer is “yes”! Quizzes dealing with the subject of eyes are very popular, and the all time favorite is The Eye Test. Many friends and family members have told me that quiz is their favorite, and I think I understand why. Eyes are one of the first things we notice about a person, and one of the last things we forget. We look in someone’s eyes to try to see if she loves us… or if she’s lying.

I tried to find actual scientific evidence that eyes reveal our personalities or moods, but I wasn’t able to find anything to base a quiz on. Intuitively, though, I know we can learn a lot about people from their eyes. And I’m not talking color as much as I am expression and shape. Do you agree? Are you drawn to people with expressive eyes?

I lucked out and recently found more images from the artist who did the images for The Eye Test in my collection of purchased images for this site. Is everyone ready to do a round 2 for The Eye Test? The The Abstract Eye Test is similar to the original, except the images and results are very different. Find out how you see the world, and how the world sees you. As always, let me know what you think of your result!

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on The Abstract Eye Test? Is it true for you?
  2. Do you think your eyes fit your personality? What do they reveal about you?
  3. Have you ever learned something about someone by looking into his or her eyes? What did you learn?
  4. Take The Wild Eye Makeup Test? What do you think of your result?

New Quiz: What’s Your Sense of Humor Like?

two girls on bicycles having fun

What sort of sense of humor do you have? Take my quiz to find out!

Do you have a good sense of humor? Even if don’t think you’re all that funny, you probably have a better sense of humor than you realize. Maybe you’re simply sarcastic and quippy… or witty and observational. I think we all have varying humor personalities – both in the humor we use and the humor we appreciate. That’s why sometimes the best joke goes flat with the “wrong crowd” or why your friends think you’re hilarious, even when you aren’t trying to be.

I have been wanting to write a quiz about humor style for a while, but I didn’t know where to begin. There’s so many types of humor in the world, and trying to break humor into categories seemed like an impossible task to me. Luckily, I stumbled upon the research of Dr. Rod Martin recently, and I liked the way he put humor into four categories. I have drawn from his basic framework for this quiz, but I will admit that I tweaked it a bit. I found his research to be a bit preachy and labeling for my taste, and I wanted a humor quiz to be fun!

Anyway, take What’s Your Sense of Humor Like?, and let me know what you get. Does your result fit you? I’d love to hear more about what sort of humor you like in the comments below!

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on What’s Your Sense of Humor Like? Is it true for you?
  2. Do you consider yourself  funny person? Why or why not?
  3. Have you consciously worked on being funnier? Or does whatever sense of humor you have come naturally to you?
  4. What comedians, tv shows, and / or movies do you find funny?
  5. Take Do You Have a Good Sense of Humor? What do you think of your result?

New Quiz: Are You a Geek or a Hipster?

hipster looking woman with tattoos and piercings

Are you more of a geek or more of a hipster? Take my latest quiz to find out.

Do you know any geeks? What about any hipsters? Do you find it hard to distinguish between the two? I am finding it hard to distinguish between hipsters and geeks, at least by appearances alone. Some cities, like Austin and San Francisco, have a lot of both – and there is starting to be a lot of overlap between the two subcultures. When I see someone in an indie coffee shop working hard on her laptop wearing a cool t-shirt… well, which is she? ;-) Hipster or geek?

Of course, people on the internet never get sick of discussing subcultural differences. And since there are plenty of both hipsters and geeks online (or people who at least accuse one another of being hipsters and geeks), I didn’t have much trouble researching this quiz. At first, I felt persuaded by the idea that hipsters and geeks have somewhat different taste, and I do think that’s true to some extent. (You will see this show up a little in my quiz.) What I totally think, though, is that geeks and hipsters have very different mindsets… and not one is better than the other.

Curious to see which mindset best fits you? Take Are You a Geek or a Hipster? to see which group you fall in with. Comment below to let me know what you think of your result – and modern subcultures in general.

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on Are You a Geek or a Hipster? Is it true for you?
  2. In your opinion, what makes someone a geek?
  3. In your opinion, what makes someone a hipster?
  4. Have you ever identified with any subcultures? Which ones?
  5. Take How Geeky Are You? What do you think of your result?

New Quiz: What Season Should You Have Been Born In?

Woman enjoying a snowy winter day

What season do you best relate to?

Do you think that the time of year you are born has some impact on your personality? I’m not talking about astrology here… I’m talking more about seasons. For example, someone born in January in the United States and July in Australia have completely different astrological signs, but they were both born in the dead of winter. Do you see what I mean? Do those two people have something in common being born in the same season … despite being born at different times of the calendar year? Science is starting to say yes.

At the very least, babies born in the winter are said to have more sensitivity to seasonal changes. (As a winter baby, I find this fact particularly interesting!) I have also heard that because of how the school year is structured, people born closer to the cutoff date for ages tend to turn out differently because they are the youngest in their class. (Something that obviously makes a much bigger difference when you’re 5 than when you’re 15.)

While I find scientific studies on birth season interesting, that’s not what my latest quiz is based on. I’d love to do a scientifically based birth season personality quiz, but there just isn’t enough research out there yet. For now, I’ll do a culturally based / historical one instead.

Take What Season Should You Have Been Born In?, and let me know what you got for your result. Is it true for you? Do you wish your birthday was in a particular season?

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on What Season Should You Have Been Born In? Is it true for you?
  2. Can you think of any ways that your birth season affected your life?
  3. If you could have your birthday in any season, what would you choose?
  4. Take What Season is Your Soul Connected To? What do you think of your result?

New Quiz: What’s Your Massage Personality?

woman on massage table with stones on back

What sort of massage should you get?

Do you like getting massages? I think that getting a massage can be a relaxing experience, if the type of massage is right… and if I need one badly enough. I’m a bit picky when it comes to massages though. They can be a really awkward experience – kind of like going to the doctor’s office – if they aren’t handled right. (Of course, who knows? Maybe I’m the one making it awkward.)

Early on, I learned that I like a deep tissue massage, and only if I’ve been sleeping badly or am sore from exercise. I like a massage to help me work out the tension and stress in my body that I can’t get out from yoga. It’s been a while since I’ve needed a massage like this, but when I do need one, nothing in the world feels better.

For a long time, I assumed that everyone shared my massage preferences, but I’ve learned that isn’t true. Some people like a lighter touch when it comes to massage – or some like to be barely touched at all. I think this might be a bit of a personality preference, and I thought it would be fun to write a quiz about it.

To see what sort of massage you should get, take my latest quiz: What’s Your Massage Personality? Let me know what you think of your result and massages in general. Do you think the quiz accurately predicted what kind of massage you should get?

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on What’s Your Massage Personality? Is it true for you?
  2. Do you like getting massages or spa treatments? Why or why not?
  3. Many spas offer spa treatments based on your ayurvedic type or dosha. Take What’s Your Dosha? What do you think of your result?

New Quiz: The Flower Petal Test

pretty pink flower

What does the flower you envision say about you?

There’s no doubt about it… this summer has been the best ever in my life for flowers. Usually the Texas heat makes flowers a little rarer than I’d like by the time July rolls around, but we’ve had a slightly cooler than usual summer. That means there are blooming flowers everywhere, and I love it. I don’t have the patience to grow my own flowers, and I’m too stingy to buy any. I’m very thankful that I have neighbors who grow beautiful flowers of every color and kind. I enjoy their flowers instead of having my own… and by enjoy, I just mean looking. Jeez! I would never clip any! ;-)

There have been a lot of quizzes on Blogthings dealing with the meaning of flowers based on type, season, and color. I really wanted to do another flower quiz to celebrate my summer of flowers, but I felt stuck in a rut. Then I found some interesting research in a book about flower petals as far as their shape, amount, and meaning went. This seemed like a cool concept to me, because it’s more about shapes and numbers than flowers.

Take The Flower Petal Test, and let me know what result you get. Does it fit? Did you find it easy or difficult to imagine a flower in your mind?

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on The Flower Petal Test? Is it true for you?
  2. What floral smell do you like the best? How do you incorporate this scent in your life?
  3. Is there a flower quiz that you’d like to see on Blogthings that hasn’t been written yet?
  4. Did you ever pick petals off a flower to see if someone loved you or not? Was your answer correct?
  5. Take What Flower Are You? What do you think of your result?
