woman in scotland

What Celtic name should you have?

Do you like Celtic names? I think they are so beautiful, and I can see why they are a big name trend in America. I was inspired to write a Celtic name quiz today, because I think Celtic names go well with autumn weather. There’s something about crisp air that feels cozy just like I imagine Ireland, Scotland, and Wales to feel.

What about you? Would you like a Celtic name? If so, take my latest quiz: What’s Your Celtic Name? Let me know what name you get and if you like it!

If you were totally bohemian, what would your name be?

I love serious, more contemplative quizzes, but I also like to have fun too! Today’s quiz is just all about goofy Thanksgiving fun, and I hope you like it! What’s Your Silly Thanksgiving Name? Get a fun name for everyone at your Thanksgiving table if you’d like.

Want more fun Thanksgiving names? Check out What’s Your Pilgrim Name? for a bit of American name history. I based this off of old pilgrim names, and it’s a Blogthings Thanksgiving classic. Looking for just a fun Thanksgiving themed name? Try What’s Your Thanksgiving Name?

If you’ve been following Blogthings for a while, you know that I love writing holiday quizzes. And Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays to write quizzes for. I just love the traditions, spirit, and food(!) of this holiday so much. One my my favorite Thanksgiving quizzes is: What Thanksgiving Dish Are You? I think my outcome changes every year.

If your Thanksgiving is anything like mine, there’s always a few characters at the table. Find out which one you are with What Thanksgiving Dinner Guest Are You? If you ask me, the best part of Thanksgiving is the leftovers – so I wrote a whole quiz about them! What Thanksgiving Leftovers Are You?

Finally, in the spirit of holiday fun, here’s a few Thanksgiving jokes that made me laugh this year:

Why did the cranberry turn red? Because it saw the turkey dressing.

Why do pilgrims’ pants fall down? Because they wear their buckles on their hats.

What did the turkey say to the computer? “Google, Google, Google”

What’s the best music to listen to on Thanksgiving? Plymouth rock!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

What’s Your Pen Name?

woman writing

Do you ever dream of being a world famous novelist? I feel like I should write a novel, but it’s always so hard to get started. I’m not sure what I would write about, and I’m afraid I would write something too goofily autobiographical. They say that the key to being a good writer is to read a ton, so I’m focusing on that for now!

Besides not having a topic for a novel, I’m not so sure I have the name to be a novelist. I’d like a name with a little more zing… a pen name or “nom de plume” is what I’m looking for 🙂 It would be nice to have a cool sounding, literary name – especially if people could pronounce it more easily than Kari. (Yes, it just rhymes with “starry,” but that’s still a bit tricky for some people!)

Were you fascinated by pen names as a kid? I always thought the idea of changing your name was extremely interesting – probably because names seemed so set in stone until I learned that you can change them. I don’t think I’d want to change my name permanently, but I think it’s cool how some authors sometimes adopt pen names to try out a different persona or to secretly test a new idea without attaching their names to it.

Instead of coming up with my own pen name, I decided to write a quiz to do it. I hope you enjoy getting your own pen name as well, and who knows? Maybe this quiz will inspire you (and me) to get writing: What’s Your Pen Name?

Discussion question: Would you prefer to write under your own name or under a pen name?

What’s Your Czech Name?

czech-woman

Have you been to eastern Europe? I have always dreamed of going, especially to Prague. It seems like such a beautiful city, and as most of my fellow Texans know, Czech pastries are amazing 🙂

I also recently discovered how much I love Czech names, both for guys and ladies. They’re really cool! Find your own Czech name with my latest quiz: What’s Your Czech Name? Comment and let me know what name you get!

Discussion question: Have you visited the Czech Republic? If not, would you like to go?

Quiz: What’s Your Expression Number?

grid of sudoku numbers

What number represents your name?

Do you think your name is important? I think we all would like to think that our name defines us in one way or another. After all, many psychological studies have shown that your name impacts how people see you – and possibly how you even see yourself. For example, I’ve always been blown away by studies that show that people are more likely to choose professions or towns to live in that sound the most like their names. People are even more likely to marry others with the same last name. It really shows me what a strong hold names have on us!

Another interesting study I recently read was that the further down the alphabet your surname is, the less likely you are to be successful. I guess I can blame my last name for not being a millionaire 😉 Similarly, “royal” sounding names were perceived as more attractive. Do you agree? Would you be more attracted to a William or Kate?

When thinking about names for the quiz I’m featuring today, I decided to step outside of how they sound and start thinking about something else: numerology. In numerology, each name is assigned a number based on its letters. (It’s sort of a complicated system, but basically each letter has a number, and you keep adding the digits together until they reduce to a set of numbers.) What you get at the end is your “expression number.”

According to numerology, your expression number reveals your talents, abilities, and shortcomings. See how accurate yours is with What’s Your Expression Number? I recently updated the programming on this quiz, making it much easier to check out other results!

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on What’s Your Expression Number? Is it true for you?
  2. What do you think of numerology? Do you dabble in it?
  3. What do you think your name conveys to people?

New Quiz: What’s Your Irish First Name?

castle on the sea in ireland

What should your Irish name be?

Do you love Irish names? Or maybe you’re even lucky enough to have one! Blogthings quiz takers have let me know over the years that they love Irish names, and our my old Irish name quiz (What’s Your Irish Name?) is still quite popular after all these years.

I personally love Irish names. Until recently, I didn’t know that I had any Irish heritage, and I didn’t grow up with any Irish names in my family tree. However, I did marry an Irish-American man, so I learned a lot about Irish names from him. And now that a recent genetic test reveals that I’m probably part Irish (got mixed up with the English side on the tree), Irish names are a little more special to me 😉

With St. Patrick’s Day coming up, I wanted to put a new spin on the Irish name ideas and write a quiz that paid tribute a bit more to the culture and meaning behind Irish names. My original quiz is great, but the answer you get is random… and it doesn’t tell you what your name means. I wanted to write a quiz that matched an Irish name to your personality – and told you what your Irish name means.

Check out my new Irish name quiz, What’s Your Irish First Name? I made all the names gender neutral, so don’t worry about the name you get being a guy’s or girl’s name. Each name should fit either gender quite nicely. This is a personality based quiz instead of a random quiz, and with eight questions, I hope that you find your name fits you.

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on What’s Your Irish First Name? Is it true for you?
  2. Do you have an Irish name that you particularly love? (Maybe it’s even your own name…)
  3. Are you part Irish at all? I’ve found that quite a few North Americans and people in northern Europe have some Irish heritage.
  4. What do you get on the old What’s Your Irish Name? quiz? Do you like that name better or less well than what you get on the new What’s Your Irish First Name?

Quiz: What’s Your Hipster Name?

20 something hipster woman with colorful tattoos

What’s your very hipster name?

Do you know a lot of hipsters? I do! I live in a very hipster neighborhood, which is a lot of fun. It’s amusing to see all of the hipsters hanging out at their favorite food trailer, 24 hour coffee shop, vintage clothing store, or record store. Not that there is anything wrong with those things, or even with being a hipster. I enjoy all of the things that hipsters like for the most part, but I swear, I’m definitely not a hipster 😉

I think “hipster” is sort of an insult, but as time goes on, it’s just more descriptive. I definitely don’t ever mean hipster to be a negative thing. If anything, I think it’s very cool to be into indie culture and to do your own thing. I think we need more subcultures in this world, so I embrace living in a hipster town like Austin.

And yes, living in Austin has let me observe a lot of hipster culture over the years, but to be honest, it’s really left me with more questions than answers. Like, what is a hipster? How do you essentialize it? Why won’t anyone admit to being a hipster? If you are an aging hipster, are you still a hipster? I don’t know the answers to any of these questions, but I sure know a hipster when I see one.  I have to admit that I envy hipster style quite a bit. Must be nice to be young and beautiful enough to get away with crazy fashions.

I thought it would be amusing to poke a little fun at hipster culture, and I hope none of the self-proclaimed hipsters take offense at this quiz: What’s Your Hipster Name? It’s just a quickie, so please give it a try and let me know what your fun hipster name is. And I’m curious… do you know any hipsters? Do you consider yourself a hipster? What makes someone a hipster these days?

Quiz: What Kind of Names Do You Like?

guestbook signed with many names

What do your favorite names say about you?

If you’ve spent a lot of time on Blogthings, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve written a lot of quiz “name generator” quizzes. I think these are a lot of fun for a quick fix, but to be honest, my true love is name psychology and in depth discussions of names. I think names are pretty interesting and important, and I do think your taste in names says a lot about you.

I know for myself, my taste in names is constantly evolving. I’m sure that it’s partially trend based (don’t you love how everyone names their kids the same thing all around the same time without knowing it), but I think there are also personality shifts happening for me. As I get older, I appreciate the idea of family names and traditional names more. When I was younger, my taste in names was definitely more modern.

Do you have a particular taste in names? Take my quiz: What Kind of Names Do You Like? to find out. Comment below and let me know what you get – and how accurate it is. I’m also curious, what are some of your favorite names? They can include your own name, relatives’ names, or simply names you like. (I have to admit that I’m rather fond of my name at this point in my life, but I hated it as a teenager because it was always mispronounced.)

One other thing – I know that this quiz is very Anglosphere focused, but that’s only because it’s the only culture where I’m super familiar with names (except for maybe a little Scandinavian, since that’s my heritage). Anyway, if you have different sorts of names in your family or different sorts of names you prefer, I’d love to hear about them! I’m dying to know what sort of names everyone likes, if only to get a few new favorites myself 🙂
