New Quiz: What’s Your Irish First Name?

What should your Irish name be?

Do you love Irish names? Or maybe you’re even lucky enough to have one! Blogthings quiz takers have let me know over the years that they love Irish names, and our my old Irish name quiz (What’s Your Irish Name?) is still quite popular after all these years.

I personally love Irish names. Until recently, I didn’t know that I had any Irish heritage, and I didn’t grow up with any Irish names in my family tree. However, I did marry an Irish-American man, so I learned a lot about Irish names from him. And now that a recent genetic test reveals that I’m probably part Irish (got mixed up with the English side on the tree), Irish names are a little more special to me 😉

With St. Patrick’s Day coming up, I wanted to put a new spin on the Irish name ideas and write a quiz that paid tribute a bit more to the culture and meaning behind Irish names. My original quiz is great, but the answer you get is random… and it doesn’t tell you what your name means. I wanted to write a quiz that matched an Irish name to your personality – and told you what your Irish name means.

Check out my new Irish name quiz, What’s Your Irish First Name? I made all the names gender neutral, so don’t worry about the name you get being a guy’s or girl’s name. Each name should fit either gender quite nicely. This is a personality based quiz instead of a random quiz, and with eight questions, I hope that you find your name fits you.

Discussion topics (Comment below and let me know any or all of these):

  1. What do you get on What’s Your Irish First Name? Is it true for you?
  2. Do you have an Irish name that you particularly love? (Maybe it’s even your own name…)
  3. Are you part Irish at all? I’ve found that quite a few North Americans and people in northern Europe have some Irish heritage.
  4. What do you get on the old What’s Your Irish Name? quiz? Do you like that name better or less well than what you get on the new What’s Your Irish First Name?

What do you think?

Your Irish First Name is Quinn

You are an even tempered, thoughtful, and wise person. You make good decisions and give good advice.
You are never one to get caught up in the moment. You have a lot of perspective on every issue.

You are often the person to play devil’s advocate. It’s not that you like to argue – you just want people to consider every argument carefully.
You take ethics seriously. You want to do the right thing no matter what, even if it’s not popular. You are true to yourself.

Quinn, meaning counsel, intelligence, and wisdom is the perfect name for you. You embody all of those things.
You may not feel like you have a lot of wisdom in your life yet, but those around you would disagree. You are the wisest person most people know.

I got Quinn… I like it. I’ve always liked the name, and now that I know what that name means, I like it even better. I don’t know whether it’s true for me or not, I like t think that I am intelligent and wise, but I think that’s for other people to decide…

I don’t know a lot of Irish names, but I like the names Quinn and Ronan.

No, I’m not part Irish… I sure love to go to Ireland someday… They got beautiful landscapes there

I got Nicola Ryan in the old quiz. I think I like both names…

Thanks again for a great quiz, Kari

    1. You are a passionate person who is easily fired up. If you care at all, you care completely and deeply.
You are fiercely loyal to those in your life that matter most. You stick by your family, friends, and your country.

You are a good and devoted leader. If you are in charge of a group, you give it your all… no matter what.
You are not one to give up hope when times get tough. You can dig deep and stay motivated. Your passion drives you.

Flannán, the name of a 9th century king, is perfect for you. You have the makings of old school royalty.
Also, Flannán means ‘red’, which is a color that fits your depth and boldness perfectly. There is nothing subtle about you.

…It fits, aside from seeming like a guy’s name. 😛

    2. I’ve always loved the name Siobhan. It looks weird, but it sounds beautiful.

    3. I am part Irish. I even have the Black Irish coloring to prove it. (When I visited Ireland years ago, people thought I might be local until they heard me speak and realized I was American.)

    4. On the old name generator, my real name gets Jacinta and my screen name gets Ella. I think I’ll stick with Flannán. 😉

Comment: Mostly true, except for not always being even-tempered nor playing devil’s advocate very often.

I’ve been to Ireland three times and use to say that they are the most friendly people in Europe. Nice, relaxed and courteous, but never ingratiating. And they’ve got a good sense of humour as well!
